Webcam test

See what your camera really delivers: picture size, real frame rate, how well it is lit, and which resolutions it supports. Nothing is recorded or uploaded.

What the numbers mean

  • Picture size: 1920×1080 is full HD. Many webcams advertise 1080p but only reach it at 15–30 fps in good light.
  • Frame rate: 30 fps is smooth. Under 24 fps is a sign of low light: webcams slow down to collect more light.
  • Brightness: aim for a clearly lit face, not too dark (noisy) and not clipped white.

Webcam looks bad? Try this

  1. Add light in front of you. This fixes more problems than a new camera.
  2. Close other apps using the camera (video calls, other browser tabs).
  3. Plug the camera straight into a USB 3 port, not a hub.
  4. Clean the lens.

Use your phone instead

A modern phone camera is far better than most webcams. Streamdzy turns a phone into a camera with nothing to install on the phone.

Questions

Does the test record me?

No. The camera preview stays in your browser and nothing is saved or sent.

Why does my camera say 720p when it is a 1080p camera?

Some cameras only reach 1080p in a certain USB mode or in good light. Press “Which sizes does it support?” to see all the sizes it offers.

Doing this a lot? Get the app.

Streamdzy is a free streaming and recording app for Windows: several cameras, your phone as a camera, going live to many places at once, and recording first so a bad connection never costs you the show.
