How to record while streaming without losing footage

Your live stream is squeezed to fit your internet and disappears if the connection drops. A local recording is your real master. Here is how to keep one every time.

Stream and recording are different things

The stream that viewers see is compressed to a bitrate your upload can carry, and if your internet drops, the missing part is gone. A recording on your PC is compressed far less and does not depend on the internet at all.

Always record locally

Press Record before you go live. In Streamdzy, a recording does not stop if a platform drops, and recording and streaming are independent: go live without recording, or the other way around. Each session is a folder with the finished show, each camera and your voice as separate files.

Make recordings crash-safe

  • Record in segments, so a crash costs seconds, not the session. Streamdzy does this and offers to recover an unfinished recording the next time you start it.
  • Check free disk space before a long show: an hour of 1080p can take several gigabytes.
  • Do not record to the drive that is almost full.

When your internet is the weak part

If your connection drops sometimes, use a stream delay: viewers watch 10 to 30 seconds behind so a short drop never reaches them. Streamdzy calls this Record first.

If you use phones as cameras

Let each phone also record at full quality. The files are sent to your PC when you stop, so the best footage never depends on Wi-Fi during the show.

Questions

How much space does recording use?

Roughly 3 to 7 GB an hour for 1080p at typical settings. 4K takes several times more.

Can I edit the recording?

Yes. The finished show and every camera are normal video files you can open in any editor.

Want all of this in one app?

Streamdzy is a free streaming and recording app for Windows: several cameras, your phone as a camera, going live to many places at once, and recording first so a bad connection never costs you the show.
