How to Use a Lavalier Microphone
Updated October 2026
A lavalier, or lav, mic clips to clothing close to the mouth. Clip it in the right place, manage the cable, and it gives a steady voice with the hands free.
Clip the mic on the centre of the chest, roughly 15 to 20 cm below the mouth, with the capsule facing up. Too low and the voice sounds dull; too high and it picks up the chin and the room more.
Tuck the cable under clothing and secure it with a small loop, so it does not rub. Clothing that rustles, such as nylon or loose fabric, is the usual source of noise. Test by moving and turning before you record.
Posture changes the distance, so check the level after you have sat in the position for a minute. Keep head movements small, because a turn takes the mic away from the mouth.
A lav mic is close, so it needs less cleanup, but it can pick up the body. Clean gently and check for rustle in the file.
