How to Record With a Headset Microphone
Updated October 2026
A headset mic is always the same distance from your mouth, which helps. Position the boom correctly, keep the room soft, and a headset gives a clean, consistent voice.
Put the mic a finger-width from the corner of your mouth, slightly to the side, so breath hits the side of the capsule rather than the front. A mic in front of the mouth pops; a mic far to the side sounds thin.
Adjust the headband so it stays put when you turn your head. A mic that moves changes the level and the tone during a take.
A headset mic is close, so the room matters less than with a desk mic, but it still picks up echo and fan noise. A soft room helps.
Use the cleanup steps gently. A close mic usually needs less cleanup than a distant one.
