Step 1: Find your comfortable range
Sing up and down a scale on an easy vowel until the notes start to strain, then back off a little. Use a keyboard or a tuner app to see the notes.
Step 2: Check the song
- Find the song’s key with the key finder.
- Sing the highest line, usually the chorus, and note if it strains.
- Shift the beat down or up one or two semitones and try again.
Step 3: Re-check the low notes
Lowering the key helps the high notes but can push the low notes too low. Find the middle where both are comfortable.
Limits
A change of key changes the sound of the beat and some samples. Try small shifts first, and listen to the beat after moving it.
