What Is a Crossfade?
Updated October 2026
A crossfade blends one sound out while another blends in over a short overlap. It is used to join two pieces of audio, or two clips, so the change is smooth.
In a crossfade, one sound gets quieter at the same time as another gets louder. The overlap makes the join smooth, rather than a click or a sudden change in the background.
Joining two recordings, joining two clips in an edit, and moving from one piece of music to another. For speech, a short crossfade keeps the words clear.
Play the join several times at normal volume. A click, a dip or a change in the room means the fade needs changing.
The crossfade how-to has the steps.
Tunedzy Multitrack lets you overlap clips with fades and check the join by ear.

A fade changes one sound on its own. A crossfade joins two sounds.
The overlap is too short, or the room tone differs. Adjust both.
