How to Test Your Microphone
Updated October 2026
A five-minute test catches most microphone problems before a recording. Check the level, the noise, the pops and the placement, and listen on headphones.
Record a phrase at normal volume. The peaks should sit well below the top of the meter. If they touch it, move back or lower the gain.
Record silence. Listen for hiss, hum, fan noise and clicks. Turn off the things you can, and check again.
Say words with p and b. If you hear a thump, add a pop filter or move slightly to the side. Move the mic and listen to the change.
Listen on headphones, because small noises are easier to hear there. Keep the test short, and go ahead once it sounds right.
Tunedzy checks the peaks and cleans what remains, but the test before the take still matters most.
