How to Record Outdoor Interviews
Updated October 2026
Outdoor interviews fight wind, traffic and crowds. A windshield, a close mic and a spot out of the wind make most of the difference. Cleanup can handle the rest.
Wind is the biggest problem outdoors. A foam windshield handles a light breeze; a furry one handles stronger wind. Keep the mic out of the wind line, and stand with the wind behind you if you can.
Pick a spot away from the road. Record a few seconds of the place to hear the noise, and move if it is too loud. A quiet side street is better than the main road.
A low cut removes much of the wind rumble, and gentle noise reduction handles the rest. The wind guide covers the method.
