Step 1: Record several takes
Record the lead, then two or three doubles, and a set of ad-libs in different tones. Layers are what give the style its width and weight.
Step 2: Use stronger pitch correction on the leads
Set a fast retune speed and the correct key and scale. Use a key finder on the beat first, so the notes snap to the right scale. The key finder gives you the key.
Step 3: Stack and spread
- Pan the doubles left and right at a lower level than the lead.
- Add an octave-down layer under a few lines for weight, and an octave up for air, very quietly.
- Filter the effects so they do not fight the beat: cut the low end of the reverb and delay returns.
Step 4: Protect the words
Automate the effects to turn down while the lead is singing a key word. A mix full of effects still has to be clear on a phone speaker.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a lot of plugins?
No. Doubles, fast tuning, and a filtered reverb and delay get most of the character.
How do I keep the words clear?
Lower the effects while the lead sings important words, and check on a phone speaker.
What key should I tune to?
Find the beat’s key first with the free key finder, then set the pitch tool to it.
