Discord
Open User Settings → Voice & Video. Under noise suppression you will usually see None, Standard and an AI-based option (the labels change over time). Echo cancellation and automatic gain control are separate switches.
- Use the stronger suppression for a noisy room and speech-only chat.
- Turn automatic gain control off if you are a musician or you want a steady level; it pumps the volume up in quiet moments.
- Use manual input sensitivity if the automatic one cuts you off, and set it just above your room noise.
Zoom
Open Settings → Audio and find Suppress background noise. It usually offers Auto, Low, Medium and High. Auto is a good default; High removes the most but can clip soft speech or music. For music or singing, use Original sound options instead of suppression.
Microsoft Teams
Open Settings → Devices and look for Noise suppression. Typical choices are Auto, Low, High and Off. Auto and High are enough for most home offices; Low suits quiet rooms and keeps your voice more natural.
Using a noise canceller before the app
If you clean your mic with a tool such as the free Clean Streaming Mic and send it through a virtual audio cable, the app receives a voice that is already clean. Running strong suppression on top can make speech sound thin or choppy.
| Setup | App suppression setting |
| App only, noisy room | Highest suppression the app offers |
| App only, quiet room | Low or Standard |
| Pre-cleaned mic via virtual cable | Low or Off |
| Singing or instruments | Off, use the app’s original-sound option |
Cable setup steps are in our virtual audio cable guide.
Quick checks that fix most call audio
- Use headphones so the app’s echo cancellation has nothing to fight.
- Choose the correct input device; many laptops list several microphones.
- Do a test recording or a call with a friend before an important meeting.
Try it free: Clean Streaming Mic
Learn your room noise, remove it live and feed OBS, Discord or Zoom. Runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
Which Discord noise suppression setting is best?
Use the stronger option for noisy rooms and the lighter one for quiet rooms. If your mic is already cleaned before Discord, use the lightest setting.
Why does noise suppression make me sound robotic?
Heavy suppression removes parts of your voice along with the noise. Lower the strength, or clean the mic once before the app instead of stacking filters.
Should I turn off automatic gain control?
For steady levels, music, or if you use a compressor, yes. It raises the volume in quiet moments, which brings noise up with it.
